October Inspiration Presentations

One thing the 20fourLabs team is great at is moaning, the other thing they are even better at is delivering results. So after much whining (Marian) and whingeing (Marquin) – five of our guys once again presented interesting and informative sites and applications and got the rest of us all fired up for another month of creating cool sh*t!

First up was Ronald. It’s always a task keeping our Amabacha to the time limit; this dude prepares slides and notes and goes the whole hog. I bet he used to be a boy scout…
Ronald’s talk was about the awesome trip he took to Germany to the Nokia World Conference … which was a pretty big deal so we can forgive him for going on a bit. You can see more of what this lucky labster got to play with here

Next up was our dark horse Marquin, quiet and reticent to present to the intimidating team of fellow geeks, Marquin surprised us all with a very cool presentation on Crazyegg.com. For those of you who think that analytics are nothing more than a boring list of numbers and dull grey graphs think again.
Crazyegg have some cunning ways of pulling and displaying data about your users that will make you pour over every referral and find creative ways of putting more ‘confetti’ on your page. The four options they offer are Overlays, Lists, Heat maps and Confetti, with each option being more informative and dare I say it… prettier, than the last.
To spite his fears Marquin spoke slowly and eloquently enough that after his 5 minutes we decided we may well have to give this product a go!

Another of our quiet heroes is Masud, who makes the cool ideas borne within the mobile team, into reality.
Masud spoke about something that has been close to my heart for more years than I will say (that would give away my age) VRML- more specifically the interactive and real-time 3D software from http://www.bitmanagement.com/. And as if that wasn’t enough for us to absorb he also gave away his secret to being an enigmatic genius by showing us an area on a favourite site that most of us had not been aware of http://www.scribd.com/mobile. You can download a LOT of very cool resources from there so give that a visit and feed your brain.

Marian our Mobile madwoman let slip a glimpse of her psycho side (never mind Marian we all knew it was there) by demoing a game seeped in crime and debauchery… What she seemed to find exciting about this, other than the bloodletting and drug taking that is, is how the young creator became a millionaire by building it from his bedroom. Not only a true entrepreneurial success story this game is also a prime example of how well the freemium model can work.
Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0GBn2-85Eo&feature=player_embedded# and decide for yourself whether it’s healthy to live out your darker urges online.

Our last speaker of the hour was Blue Worlds Bradley, proving yet again that he is more than just a pretty face.
First he showed us these super nifty little geek toys called Poken (doyoupoken.com) – almost like pokemon but more useful and not animated… ok so maybe nothing like pokemon but equally cute.
The poken are these little character keyring USB social networking doodad gadgets, a combo no marketingpersonposingasageek can resist! Even the REAL geeks were rather impressed. You load your networking details via USB and then should you meet another Poken owner with whom you wish to exchange info you rub/hold/push the two little doodads together rather suggestively and VOILA! The data is transferred. The marketing opportunities are endless!
Added to the toy show Bradley also showed us something he found on one of our favourite sites EVER! Mashable obviously! http://mashable.com/2009/10/05/photosketch/ Imagine doodling a scene and having some technomagik create a proper photo mashup from your stickmen sketch!? The first time I saw this I thought it was an April fool’s day joke, it’s THAT unreal ;) Due to it being so ridiculously cool their site seems to go down often but go to Mashable so long for more info.

Thanks for the Poken mention! They’re great ice-breakers, and useful, too. When someone you’ve “Pokened” updates their contact information, it’s dynamically updated in your friend list. You can get every model including the new Business Poken Pulse at http://PokenZoo.com/store

We are currently trying out htt://www.clicktale.com
So far I’m very impressed. Just need it to run for abit longer to get some solid data. The user videos are very big brother, but great to see how they navigate your site.
