Geek Christmas Gift Guide

Admittedly I have been a little naughty this year. For one, I didn’t always comb my hair or wear matching socks to work and my punctuality has been somewhat of late (excuse the pun). Also, I avoided pesky relatives where I could and threw moldy cheese at my ex-neighbor. And it’s not really my fault that I had to lie about that website which popped up just as the missus was walking in. I wasn’t about to explain the rational behind blogging about the female form to a fuming wife (Come on, you probably had the odd blow-up-reindeer to explain to Mrs Clause as well right? No? Oh well…) Also, I forgot to use LF for line-breaks and sometimes swore in my comments. And two of my global variables end in _malema but hey, for the most part, my code is fairly clean. And I have blogged for 20FourLabs fairly regularly and have given some thought towards the environment by wearing green on Thursdays and not talking too loudly. And I have two little people who can vouch for me being an awesome dad. I even change diapers…
So, Santa, mind if I call you Nic? What would you say to filling up my teeny-tiny stocking this year with my teeny-tiny wishlist (see below) of must-have geek toys? I promise to behave better at funerals and not cheat on Farmville again.

Nokia N900
Boasting a 600Mhz processor that integrates a PowerVR SGX 530 graphics processor (OpenGL 2.0)and running Maemo, the N900 is, imho, the smartest smartphone that Nokia has ever produced. It also features a huge 3.5-inch screen and full slide-out 3-row full QWERTY keyboard, touchscreen (not multi-touch though), a 5 mega-pixel camera and 32Gig internal memory and not forgetting the Mozilla-based web browser with Adobe Flash 9.4 support. This is one mean piece of technology. Make sure it’s on your Christmas wish-list.
JVC XS-SR3 Curved iPod Dock

For all of us tired of the old box-shaped docking solutions, JVC has just launched this uber-sexy curved dock with its wraparound and glossy black styling. The neodymium magnets which power this baby provide a crisper and cleaner sound while the Dolby Virtual Surround creates the illusion of a wider sound field when viewing video.
Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard

It’s a Bluetooth laser virtual keyboard that projects a full size keyboard onto any surface. It connects to your PDA’s, smartphones or PC and the device is basically the same size as a cigarette lighter. It allows you to type away using simulated keyclicking sounds. Its a bloomin’ virtual keyboard. Awesomeness!
Cyborg Robotic keyboard

Looking as if it was ripped off the bridge of the Galactica and fused with the weapons console of the Andromeda and the navigation pad of the Enterprise, this awesome piece of hardware come with customizable backlighting, 12 programmable gaming keys (all metal-plated) and a cool Cyborg Mode which can disable Windows keys at an instant and transform into your customized gaming killing machine.
Canon EOS 450D

This 450D serves up 12-megapixel shots bursting with rich detail and accurate colours.and boasts an impressive 3-inch screen with 3.5fps continuous shooting speed making it a joy to use.
iPod Video Goggles

These video goggles plug directly into your video iPod and project a virtual 24 inch TV directly in front of you. A great accessory to wear to the beach, the dull boardroom meeting or when your mother-in-law comes to visit. Just make sure you don’t wear it while driving!
Stainless steel 8 Gig Video Watch

From the days us geeks sported a bulky Casio calculator-type, we all new wristwatches are not only meant for timekeeping. Enter the stainless steel wristwatch with a massive 8Gig of internal memory and a full color 1.8″ LED screen. Plus the device comes with a built-in voice recorder, an earphone jack, the ability to listen to music and view jpegs at the same time and much much more. Flash this baby the next time you’re ordering a martini (shaken) and ecstatic cries of ‘Oh James’ will ensue (yes, even if you’re a Wickus and not a James)
Iron Man Glowing Repulsor T-Shirt

Every geek needs a wicked T. And no piece of clothing screams awesome more than the Iron Man Glowing Repulsor T-shirt from Marvel. So lifelike, you will almost feel the shrapnel in your heart.
Playstation 3 Slim 120GB

There are reasons why the Playstation 3 from Sony is the choicest console on the market. I could cite a few - hinting at the built-in WiFi, 120GB HD, built in Blu-ray player and the best high definition viewing experience available - but hey, you probably already knew that.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)

I’m not much of a first-person-shooter gamer and I still very much prefer strategy and RPG-types in line of Warcraft and Diablo to the skop, skiet en donner genre. However, Modern Warefare 2 has me excited, very excited. Check out some of the reviews and footage for the game here
Kindle DX Wireless reading device

When e-reading eventually takes off on our shores, I foresee court battles over digital-printing rights, licensing and streaming of media. Parties will scream, shout, rant and rave while I will be lazing back on my couch, reading about the unfolding digital vs print debacle on my Kindle DX. With it’s large rotatable 9.7″ screen, native PDF device and ability to store 3500 books, I have embraced change. So should you.
Mario & Luigi Nintendo Wall Graphics

Liven up the home-office or for your kids rooms with these retro vinyl restickable wall-stickers feature everyones favorite plumbers in their early 15 pixel representation.
iRobot Roomba 560 Vacuum Cleaning Robot

Don’t let the size of this little bot fool you. The Roomba systematically cleans four rooms on a single charge, gets into hard-to-reach areas like wall edges and beneath furniture, avoids stairs and other drop offs and automatically adjusts from carpets to hard floors and back again. On-board scheduling allows you to preset up to seven cleaning times per week for Roomba to clean when it’s most convenient for you. When its battery is running low, or when the cleaning is complete, Roomba automatically returns to its self-charging Home Base to dock and recharge. Now ain’t that a shnizzle?
