Google’s Nexus One has officially launched and while I haven’t yet been able to get my paws on one (still sadly unavailable  in South Africa), I have managed to gather some  reviews, comparisons and useful specs to help shed-light on the first official Google Phone. However, unlike most blogs, this will NOT be a Nexus vs iPhone type post.

Looking a lot more like the iPhone than any other phone currently on the market, the 118mm (h) by 59.8mm (w) by 11.5mm (d) phone weighs in at a mere 130g (Making it thinner and lighter than the iPhone).  The screen resolution is upped to a gorgeous 800×480 (as opposed to the iPhones 320×480 pixels) OLED touchscreen and the Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD 8250 1GHZ processor with 512MB RAM already has me salivating at the CPU speed (twice as fast as the iPhone). This superfast processor seamlessly handles the Nexus One’s 3D graphics, multiple applications (which the iPhone lacks) , runs the latest version of Android (2.1)  and the software is deeply integrated with Google Voice allowing for a 90% accuracy of speech-text conversion (my iPhone suffered an impediment). Included in the huge array of software easter eggs are features such as Live Wallpaper, 3D scrolling of apps and a Gmail app to outrival all previous incarnations thereof. Also, the 5MP camera clearly outsnaps the 3MP iPhone camera and includes auto-focus and flash.

Okay so I may be leaning towards a slight bias here. But the Nexus, despite looking like the guys at Google googled an iPhone, is the first real developer-friendly phone that doesn’t require being jail-broken before you can get you paws in the code. Yes, it may lack the storage capacity of the iPhone (Nexus ships with a 4Gig SD card upgradeable to 32Gigs) and may not have the easy iTunes synchronization. It may lack a few tweaks here and there (multi-touch screen) but it is a Google Phone. And if that’s not enough to convince you or you still can’t quite seem to make up your mind, maybe these links will:

I’ve played around on one (friend works at Google) about 3 weeks ago and it is superb. Having a 5MP camera with flash makes a massive difference to the HTC magic I’m using now. The 3D scrolling of apps makes it look like a Star Wars movie but it’s pretty nifty. If I remember my friend had a 32-gig SD card though I stand to be corrected. It’s def as thin as they say it is and fits in the palm of your hand, very similar to the iPhone’s fit. We were running a few programs and it was still working pretty quick incl playing around with a future Google app in dev.

With regards to multi-touch… I thought that was patented to Apple?
